Goodwill visit to Sri Lanka

JMSDF ship JS Izumo (DDH 183) and JS Sazanami (DD 113) made a goodwill visit to Sri Lanka from 20th to 23rd July 2017.
Both Japan and Sri Lanka are maritime states that blessed by the sea. Japan relies on long Sea Lane of Communication including the Indian Ocean and Sri Lanka locates its strategic key point. It is critically important for both of us to ensure freedom of navigation, secure seas and maritime connectivity. Japan and Sri Lanka share common challenges. Therefore, promoting the relationship between Japan and Sri Lanka will lead to accomplish “open and stable seas based on the rule of law” in the Indian Ocean. Our relationship also support peace and stability in this region.

An international court handed down a decision that pointed a finger at the unjustness of Beijing’s self-serving actions and statements related to its territorial claims in the South China Sea.
Regarding the so-called nine-dash line - based on which China claims sovereignty - the arbitration court said "there was no legal basis for China to claim historic rights". The court also said "there was no evidence that China had historically exercised exclusive control" over the resources and waters.
The international court further concluded that China was not entitled to an exclusive economic zone for the artificial islands it has constructed in the Spratly Islands in the South China Sea.
