Norway is about 1,700 km long, yet at the end of one fjord Sweden is only 6.3 km away. Why is Norway just a thin strip on the western edge of Scandinavia? A wall of mountains runs down the whole peninsula: rain west of the crest flows to the Atlantic, rain east of it to the Baltic. Norway once reached past that crest, but lost Jämtland and Härjedalen to Sweden in 1645 and Bohuslän in 1658; in 1751 the border was fixed, and in the empty mountains it was drawn along the water divide. So Norway kept the steep Atlantic side, and Sweden got the long gentle slope to the Baltic. In the ice age, glaciers carved deep valleys down to the coast; when the ice melted, the sea flooded them and they became fjords — like Sognefjord, over 200 km long. Counting every fjord, the mainland coast is 28,953 km long, and over 100,000 km with the islands.
