Swedish iron ore kept the German war machine alive, and in winter that ore had to pass through Norway. Both Germany and Britain were planning to violate Norwegian neutrality, but Germany moved first. On 9 April 1940, Operation Weserubung seized Denmark in hours and fought for Norway for two months. An old cannon sank the cruiser Blucher, the king refused to surrender, the Allies failed at Trondheim, and Narvik was taken and then abandoned.
