The Archaeological Museum at the University of Stavanger (AM or AMS) is part of the University of Stavanger and works with the history of Rogaland from the first people came here until the end of the Middle Ages. The museum is located at Peder Klows gate 30 an on Våland. The Iron Age farm at Ullandhaug, close to the University of Stavanger, is also part of the museum.
The museum was separated from Stavanger Museum and established as an independent institution on 1 January 1975. It was then housed in Frue Meieri's former premises. In 1995, the museum moved into newly built premises.
The museum's collections contain over 12,000 finds from Rogaland, in addition to a scientific magazine. Every spring and summer, the museum arranges archaeological investigations in Rogaland. The permanent exhibition, called the Museum Library, provides an introduction to Rogaland's prehistory through a thematic presentation of antiquities and other finds. The museum library has an archive open to the public, with information arranged by place of discovery.
The number of visitors increased by 12.5 percent in 2007, rising from 37,589 visitors in 2006 to 44,538 in 2007.
The Archaeological Museum in Stavanger became part of the University of Stavanger on 1 January 2009.
The museum runs an extensive publishing business and has its own publishing house, AM publishing house. The publisher publishes the magazine Frá Haug ok heiðni, which comes with four issues a year and is distributed to all members of the Rogaland Archaeological Association.
