Vålandstårnet or Vålandspibå in Stavanger can be found on Vålandshaugen (84 masl), which is the highest point in the district. The tower is built on what was previously called Axelsborg. Vålandstårnet is a lookout tower built in 1895, with a guardhouse for the city's first pressurized water pool.
Before today's Våland tower was built, there must have been a lookout tower on this site. This was built during the Napoleonic War in the period 1807–1814. This was called Vålandspibå, a name that remains the name of today's tower. For about. In 1860, there was very little left of the "pibå" itself, and a circular cairn was erected. This cairn was painted red and applied in large letters «Do not hurt me». A staircase led up to a plateau, where people could enjoy the good views over the rural surroundings.
Vålandstårnet, 1895
When the water basins were built in 1893-1894, people wanted everything possible to avoid the demolition of this lookout tower. Today's tower was built in 1895. This tower was erected in connection with the municipal waterworks having built two pools on Vålandshaugen. In this tower, space was furnished for a firefighter and a restaurant. The tower at St. Hanshaugen in Oslo was used as a model for the construction of Vålandstårnet, and many called this Vålandsborgen.
In 1914, the health council condemned the building as a residence, and the tower was refurbished in 1917. With the occupation in 1940, the building was taken over by the Germans who used Vålandstårnet as an observation post.
After the war, the tower was used by the Park and Sports Service as a storage / living room, the Civil Defense, the police, the taxi center, and the Radio Ræle League (Shortwave Radio Association). The first floor was also used as a private residence until 1970 by the Housing Office.
IFM the tower's 100th anniversary in 1995, a Friends' Association was founded for the tower. These worked hard on the tower and had it rehabilitated. The tower was closed again in 2006. In January 2016, the tower reopened after extensive rehabilitation with the help of funds from Stavanger Municipality and the DNB Foundation. Faber Bygg was the executive contractor.
Vålandstårnet currently has a Sunday café every Sunday and is open for rent by private teams and associations through Eiganes & Tasta Frivillighetssentral.
