This Was Hands Down the BEST Cruise Port Day Yet! | Flåm Norway Celebrity Apex

Planning a Norwegian Fjords cruise on Celebrity Apex and wondering how to explore Flåm on your own? Join us as we tackle one of Norway’s most breathtaking cruise ports completely independently, no expensive ship excursions required! Today is going to be an epic day as we ride the world-famous Flåm Railway, take in unreal mountain views, and combine some hiking and mountain biking for an active day exploring the fjords.

We kick off our morning as soon as we step off Celebrity Apex into Flåm harbor, where we spot local wildlife right by the water. Our first official stop is Flåm Bakeri, located inside the Flåm Railway Station, on our ongoing quest to find the best Norwegian School Bread (Skolebrød) on this cruise. After trying their delicious pastries and coffee, we board the famous Flåm Railway (Flåmsbana) for a 20 km scenic train ride up to Myrdal. Along the way, we share essential tips on booking tickets through Norway's Best, seat selection recommendations for the best views, and our stop at Kjosfossen Waterfall to witness the legendary Huldra forest spirit performance.

Once we reach the top at Myrdal Station, our on-our-own adventure really begins with a scenic 3.5 km hike downhill toward Kardal, passing flower-filled meadows, babbling brooks, plunging waterfalls, and fairy-tale wooden bridges. At the farm in Kardal, we pick up pre-booked rental bikes and begin a spectacular 17 km mountain bike ride back down through the valley. The cool air, mountain tunnels, and breathtaking storybook scenery make this one of the best biking experiences we've ever had.

Back in Flåm village, we explore local souvenir shops before heading to Ægir Gastropub, a Viking-themed restaurant, for a delicious Viking Meat Plate featuring lamb sausage, spareribs, pulled goat, and roasted potatoes. Before reboarding the ship, we make sure to try a traditional Norwegian brown cheese waffle with strawberry jam. We wrap up our unforgettable port day taking in the dramatic high walls of the Aurlandsfjord from our balcony during sailaway, followed by headliner comedian Stephen Wiley and the variety show in Eden onboard Celebrity Apex.

About Our Cruise

We took a 7-night cruise aboard Celebrity Cruises' Celebrity Apex in August 2026. This cruise sailed out of Southampton to Haugesund, Ålesund, Flåm, and Bergen.
