November 3, 1939: Norway Seizes Nazi-Captured U.S. Ship | WWII Day 64

On November 3, 1939, the long-running City of Flint incident comes to an end.

After being captured by German forces weeks earlier, the American freighter is pursued into the harbor of Haugesund, Norway, where Norwegian sailors board and seize the ship, removing the German prize crew.

The action reinforces Norway’s neutrality while returning the vessel to American control—bringing a tense international incident involving Germany, the Soviet Union, and the United States to a close.

Even neutral waters are becoming part of the war.
