On Christmas Day 1943, the German battleship Scharnhorst sailed from Norway into the freezing Barents Sea, believing she was hunting an Allied Arctic convoy. But British codebreakers, radar, and Admiral Bruce Fraser had already turned the night into a trap.
This video tells the story of how Scharnhorst was hunted down by the Royal Navy during the Battle of the North Cape. Outnumbered, blinded by radar-directed fire, and pounded by 14-inch shells from HMS Duke of York, Scharnhorst fought a desperate running battle through snow, darkness, star shells, and torpedoes.
