The Battle of North Cape, fought in December 1943, was a decisive Arctic naval battle between the British Royal Navy and the German battleship Scharnhorst. Germany sent Scharnhorst to intercept Allied convoys bound for the Soviet Union, hoping to disrupt vital supply lines in brutal winter conditions.
British forces, using radar and superior coordination, tracked and engaged the German ship. After hours of pursuit and combat in darkness and snow, Scharnhorst was crippled by gunfire and torpedoes and eventually sank. The battle marked the end of Germany’s ability to threaten Arctic convoys with surface warships and reinforced Allied naval dominance in the North Atlantic.
