365 stone steps, laid by hand by Sherpas from Nepal – leading to one of the best views in Haugesund, Norway.

The Sherpa Stairs (Sherpatrappene) up Vardafjellet opened in September 2026. Around 400 metres of stone take you 75 metres up from Fjellvegen, about 2 km from the city centre, to a viewpoint over Haugesund, the islands and the open sea.

GOOD TO KNOW
• Start: by the tower blocks on Fjellvegen, about 2 km from Haugesund city centre
• Time: about 20 minutes to the top at an easy pace
• No hiking boots or special gear needed – ordinary trainers are fine
• Benches along the way, seating and a table at the top – bring a coffee and a packed lunch
• Colourful Himalayan prayer flags along the path
• Old concrete bunkers from the Second World War, when German soldiers kept watch over the shipping lanes
• An easy outing on a cruise stop in Haugesund, or a weekend walk
