Stavanger Norway Cruise Port Guide — Pulpit Rock, Fjord Cruise or Old Town

Stavanger Norway Cruise Port Guide – your ship docks right in the heart of the city, five minutes from everything worth seeing. That’s not the problem. The problem is the decision waiting at the gangway. This video breaks down the three ways to spend your day – Pulpit Rock, a Lysefjord cruise, or the old town – so you pick the right one and don’t waste a minute.

The big call here is Pulpit Rock, Lysefjord boat cruise, or stay in the old town. Pulpit Rock is eight hours round trip and needs real fitness – only works if you have ten-plus hours in port and nothing else planned. The Lysefjord cruise departs from the same quay where your ship docks, takes about four hours, and gets you that famous Preikestolen view from the water without the hike. Gamle Stavanger is free, walkable, and right next door – the lowest risk, most flexible option.

???? Getting Around
Ships dock at Strandkaien on the Vågen waterfront – you walk off the gangway and you’re already in the city. Tourist Information is two minutes away for maps and fjord cruise bookings. No taxi or shuttle needed unless your ship is at the overflow terminal at Mekjarvik, about ten kilometres out, where a shuttle runs every half hour.

????️ Top Highlights
The Lysefjord cruise is the standout for most cruisers – sheer granite walls, waterfalls dropping from hundreds of metres, and Pulpit Rock appearing about an hour in at six hundred metres above the water. Gamle Stavanger is two hundred and fifty white wooden houses on cobblestone lanes, originally built for sardine workers in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Most cruisers rush the main drag in ten minutes and miss the quieter back lanes where the real character lives.

???? Local Food & Culture
Fisketorget fish market sits right on Vågen harbour, two minutes from the ship. Prawn sandwiches and smoky fish soup are the staples, both under twenty dollars. The market smell hits you before you see it – salt air, fresh catch, bread. Arrive before one to beat the lunch queue. Stavanger’s herring industry built the white wooden houses you just walked through, and the fish market is the last visible connection to that era.

???? Smart Cruise Tips
Most cruisers queue for a taxi at the terminal when everything is a flat, paved walk along the waterfront – that wastes fifteen minutes and money. The dangerous mistake is booking a Pulpit Rock hike without checking your all-aboard time – miss a ferry connection and you’re gambling with the ship. Aim to be back at the quay forty-five minutes before all-aboard.

Stavanger is one of those places where timing, distance, and layout can make the day feel rushed. That’s why so many visitors choose local tours – they’re good value, smaller groups, and they simplify the timing so you get more done with less stress.

???? Our favourite local Stavanger tours are linked at the top – easy, trusted, great value.

Day 18. Solo Scandinavia bicycle touring Denmark Sweden Norway

Travel diary: Day 18

-Sunshine, tunnel and The Rock

Highlights: The Ryfylke Tunnel stretches approximately 14.4 kilometers and reaches a depth of 292 meters below sea level, making it the world's longest and deepest subsea road tunnel.

Woke up around 6:30 AM. I packed up and headed to the bus station, ready to make my way to Solbakk. There’s an underwater tunnel between where I was and the other side, and unfortunately, cycling through it isn’t allowed.
I assumed I could just buy a bus ticket onboard, but it turns out they only accept cash. And I hadn’t brought a single krone with me—everything on this trip has been paid with Wise.

The bus driver started saying something to me in Norwegian. I couldn’t understand, but he seemed insistent. I thought he was asking me to get off, so I started untying my bike from the rack. Suddenly, the bus started moving! It took me a moment to realize that he wasn’t kicking me off—he was actually helping me out. He told me I could just buy a ticket when I arrived at Solbakk station. What a legend. He dropped me off and left without even checking if I’d follow through. (Don’t worry—I bought the ticket. ????)

The ride from Solbakk to Preikestolen Camping Ground was absolutely stunning. The road winds through gentle 3–5% inclines in the beginning, then ramps up to a solid 9–12% near the campsite. But under a bright blue sky and sunshine? Couldn’t ask for more.

After setting up my tent, I started the walk toward Preikestolen car park—the trailhead for the famous Pulpit Rock hike. About 30 minutes into the walk, I met an elderly couple coming from the opposite direction. They stopped me and asked where I was headed. Turns out, I was walking the wrong way. The husband didn’t speak any English, and the wife only a little, but somehow, we understood each other just fine. Without hesitation, they offered to drive me to the trailhead. I was floored by their kindness. Grateful doesn’t even begin to cover it.

The 8.6km hike to Preikestolen Pulpit Rock itself took me 2 hours up (604meter) and 1 hour down. The trail is stunning, with dramatic views and just enough challenge to keep things exciting. After reaching the top and soaking in the view, I made my way back to the campsite—running and walking for about 30 minutes.

Finally had my first meal of the day after 10 hours on the move. I was starving—but it was all so worth it.

What a wonderful day ????

In case you're wondering what to do when planning a visit to Stavanger Norway, this is the video for you. I've travelled to Stavanger from Oslo via a sleeper train and I'm showing you the top things to do in Stavanger Norway.

Stavanger is Norway's capital of oil and gas industry and whilst that might not entice you to visit, Stavanger has more to offer than oil and gas. There's a reason why cruise ships stop at Stavanger's port. The historical old town is so beautiful to stroll around, the Lysefjord is just few minutes away and if you're up for it, there's also hikes you can do around.

Stavanger's city centre is compact so it's easier to walk around the city and sample its array of restaurants and cafes.

AL FILO DE PREIKESTOLEN · El Púlpito ⚠️???? Ep.3x5 Ruta Cabo Norte, NORUEGA. NORDKAPP Moto Trail Vlo

¡CONQUISTAMOS el Preikestolen!. Fiordos, Moto y Aventura Épica. ????????️

Delve into the remarkable journey of Norway's economic rise, where a combination of natural resource abundance and forward-thinking governance has propelled it to unprecedented prosperity. With a population of only 5.2 million, Norway stands as a small nation with vast territorial expanse, dominated by majestic mountains and intricate fjords. Despite its geographical constraints for agriculture, Norway's strategic location facilitated maritime trade since ancient times, laying the groundwork for its economic development.

In the 1960s, the discovery of oil ushered in a new era of wealth, positioning Norway as a significant player in the global energy market. Leveraging its hydroelectric potential and embracing progressive policies, Norway carefully managed its newfound riches, establishing itself as a Petro State without succumbing to the pitfalls of corruption and authoritarianism often associated with such status.

By channeling oil and gas revenues into the Government Pension Fund Global, commonly known as the "oil fund," Norway diversified its economy and secured its financial future, amassing a staggering $1.2 trillion in assets, making it the world's largest sovereign wealth fund. Furthermore, Norway's commitment to renewable energy, particularly hydroelectric and wind power, has not only reduced its reliance on fossil fuels but also positioned it as a leader in clean energy innovation.

With a strategic focus on exporting oil and gas while prioritizing domestic energy needs through renewable sources, Norway has emerged as a key energy supplier to the European Union, challenging the dominance of traditional players like Russia. Additionally, recent discoveries of valuable mineral reserves further solidify Norway's position as a global economic powerhouse, poised to shape the future of technology and green energy.

Experience the fascinating narrative of Norway's ascent to becoming the world's richest country, where prudent governance, sustainable practices, and a steadfast commitment to prosperity for future generations have paved the way for unparalleled success.
